ABSTRACT

During the past several decades, there has been a rapid proliferation of interest in both amateur and professional athletics. Head injury and the consequences of recurring head trauma have garnered interest among health professionals, from primary care pediatricians to neurologists, neurosurgeons, and psychiatrists. The result of this interest has led to research and long-term assessment of patients with head trauma and to the development of practice parameters such as the management of concussion in sports as established by the American Academy of Neurology (Table 1). This practice parameter is an essential guideline for all practitioners dealing with young athletes suffering concussions.
