ABSTRACT

The.premise.of. this. chapter. is. that. the.field.of.human. factors/ergonomics. (HF/E).represents.a.unique.intersection.among.professional.and.academic. specialties.with.a.particular.focus.on.psychology.and.engineering..As.such,. HF/E.is. in.a.very.advantageous.position.to.both.understand.and.improve. a. major. societal. issue. of. our. time-the. relationship. between. people. and. technology.. However,. the. very. multidisciplinary. and. cross-disciplinary. attributes.that.are.the.strength.of.this.field.are.also.a.source.of.considerable. challenge.and.disputation.. It. is,. therefore,.particularly.appropriate.for.this. volume.to.offer.the.proposition.that.a.synthesis.of.theories.from.the.American.ecological.psychologist.J.J..Gibson.and.the.Russian.motor.control.theorist. N.A..Bernstein.can.serve.as.an.integrating.framework.for.HF/E.
