ABSTRACT

Analytical approaches based on landscape ecology emphasize the structural and functional patterns in the environment.9 These patterns are comprised of elements including overall vegetation structure, connectivity among elements, and anthropogenically induced fragmentation.10 Landscape ecological pattern includes the following four concepts: patch, corridor, edge, and mosaic.11 Patches are contiguous areas that do not vary in composition. Corridors create connective links between patches allowing for movement. Edges represent areas located along the boundaries of patches. The entire pattern of patches, corridors, and edges is termed the mosaic.
