ABSTRACT

The search for solutions to air quality problems has led to the development of gasoline additives that can have a positive impact on the combustion efficiency, significantly reducing emissions of carbon monoxide, ozone precursors, and hazardous air pollutants, such as benzene. However, a careful consideration of the impact of these gasoline additives on other media must be made for each circumstance. The case of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has served to highlight the potential for cross-media contamination when the environmental impact assessment is incomplete.
