ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with numerical solution of nonlinear equations and systems. It describes several commonly used methods of rootfinding. Several methods of rootfinding have been proposed that are faster than the method of bisection; the chapter discusses the chord method, secant method, and Newton's method. The chapter also discusses Newton’s linearization for one scalar equation. Besides Newton’s method, other methods are available for the solution of nonlinear systems. There is, for example, a multidimensional version of the secant method called the Broyden method.
