ABSTRACT

A chemical covalent bond can be considered as an elastic spring connected with two balls (atoms). As shown in Figure 9.1 for a water molecule, each bond has a dynamic stretching vibration. The stronger the spring (i.e., the bond), the faster the vibration. Thus, the frequency of vibration is an indication of bond strength or can be related to the type of bond.
