ABSTRACT

How does the local determine the global? How do we find the most suitable medium for a particular computational task? Are there any parameters that govern the characteristic transitions of a medium between various domains of phase space? All these questions have intrigued scientists for a long time. The connection between the structure of a single automaton, like a neighbourhood, state set, cell state transition rule, boundary conditions, and the resultant behaviour of the whole automaton collective has been a persistent topic in the exploration and understanding of complex systems represented in terms of cellular automata and automata networks [382, 648, 491, 645, 647, 161, 459, 460, 461].
