ABSTRACT
The Royal Marsden National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust and Institute of Cancer Research have implemented intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for treating prostate cancer with involved lymph nodes. C M. Nutting and D P. Dearnaley presented an overview of the complete IMRT programme at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. Trade-offs in IMRT included a delivery of higher integral dose outside the target and an increase in monitor unit (MU) between two and eight times the number of MUs per field compared to the conformal radiotherapy plan. Gynaecological tumours present another opportunity for radiation therapy improvement with IMRT. Clinical IMRT of the head-and-neck was reviewed by M T. Guerrero Urbano and Nutting. One of the definitive implementations of prostate IMRT with the dynamic MLC technique is at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York. The IMRT technique used was a step-and-shoot technique using an Elekta accelerator. Guerrero Urbano and Nutting have reviewed the limited clinical IMRT of the lung.
