ABSTRACT

The ultimate goal of decommissioning projects is the assurance that future site or building uses will not result in unreasonable risk to human health and the environment due to residual contamination from past operations. This goal is achieved through the remediation, if necessary, of the facility/site, and then demonstrated by performing a final status survey which shows that appropriate radiological release criteria have been met. The recently published Multiagency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) provides Federal agency consensus guidance on how to design and perform final status surveys for radiological contamination. The MARSSIM approach is fundamentally based on the data quality objectives (DQO) process.
