ABSTRACT

Our willingness to actively care for others is affected by certain feelings and states of mind. If we have a strong sense of self-esteem, self-efficacy, personal control, optimism, and belonging, there is a greater chance we will go beyond the call of duty. Each of these person states is explained in this chapter and the research supporting direct relationships between these states and actively caring behavior is reviewed. Understanding these connections enables us to design conditions and interventions to increase actively caring behavior throughout an organization or community.
