ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a perspective of how Ethernet has converged with EtherNOT, where EtherNOT is informally defined as any technology that is not Ethernet.

Over the past decade, many aspects of the convergence of Ethernet and EtherNOT can be attributed to high-end computing (HEC). While more than 85% of all installed network connections were Ethernet by the late 1990s,1 Ethernet made up less than 2% of the networks used in the TOP500 supercomputers in the world.2 In turn, more than 98% of the networks used in the TOP500 supercomputers were EtherNOT.
