Introduction and overview

Time series are found in many places, very often presented as charts, in newspapers, business reports, scientific publications, and elsewhere. In The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, Little et al. (1965), a series is defined as a number of things of one kind, following one another in temporal succession. In a time series the things of one kind are numerical records (observations or measurements) of successive, varying values of some given quantity.
