ABSTRACT

THE REQUIREMENT FOR CALIBRATION The instruments and controls used in manufacturing and in laboratory testing must perform properly to achieve consistent quality. To ensure reliability, some types of mechanical or electronic equipment, especially measuring devices and instruments, require periodic calibration. This consists of a comparison of their actual performance to that of a known standard, coupled with appropriate adjustments if needed. This concept is basic in the science of measurement, known as metrology. Therefore, calibration is required for specified items, that is, those used either in the testing of a component or a dietary supplement, or in the manufacturing of a dietary supplement, as stated in §111.27(b).
