ABSTRACT
I. Introduction The lungs are constantly exposed to microorganisms. A complex system of host defences is required to prevent these organisms from gaining access to and for removing them from the lungs. This process, however, may be breached and pathogenic microorganisms may reach the alveoli. The combined effects of microorganism multiplication and host response determine the clinical condition known as pneumonia.
