ABSTRACT

Any discussion of the future of remote sensing is inherently problematic, in the sense that no one, of course, can presume to know the future-and the alternative-the extrapolation of current trends forward for several years-hardly carries the insight that the activity implies. The result is likely to be less about the future than it is about the present and our understanding of the past. Nonetheless, there is value in thinking about the implications of current developments, as we may be able to envision some of the synergies, unanticipated consequences, or opportunities that may not be immediately obvious in our routine preoccupation with day-to-day activities.
