ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidelines for implementing a geographic information system (GIS). It describes the steps, activities, and issues involved in carrying out a GIS project. In some respects, developing a GIS can be daunting-particularly for big projects. There are so many decisions to be made and so many tasks to do and to coordinate. In other respects, GIS implementation can seem deceptively simple-particularly if one makes simple assumptions. This discussion will put GIS implementation in perspective and help readers understand the GIS implementation process and get started.
