ABSTRACT
The balance principle is the process engineer’s most important tool. First we deal with balances in general. Then we formulate a more detailed procedure for deriving balance equations with an emphasis on mass balances. Recycling improves the effectiveness of a process, but the resulting balance equations become coupled and more difficult to solve. Finally, we look at the degrees of freedom and the solvability of the equations.
