ABSTRACT

The Orwell quote above, as it turns out, did not apply to 1984. But it might well apply to everybody in 2014. Or apply to you now, depending on who you are. Is privacy, and pretty much the bulk of the U.S. Bill of Rights, going to be lost? And with it our democracy? It’s common to say, “If you haven’t done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear if your movements and pronouncements are an open book.” That might, only might, be true, if you trust the government. And thinking now of the Patriot Act in general, and the Valerie Plame incident in particular, I don’t.
