Bullets to Remember A DMC is a committee independent of the sponsor. DMCs typically consist of both physicians and biostatisticians. Sponsors should have standard operating procedures for the creation, organi-
zation and management of DMCs. Even the appearance of conflict of interest among DMC members must be
avoided. Both the sponsor staff and the DMC members are “officers” of the clinical trial
and must respect one another’s authority and responsibility.
