ABSTRACT

What are DNA adducts? What do they have to do with cancer? What are the sources of DNA adducts? And what role does mass spectrometry (MS) have in this?

Tumor incidence and mortality are growing yearly, independent of the aging of the population. In some industrialized countries, cancer is liable for almost 30% of the total mortality. The real contribution of lifestyle, personal habits, and diet to this increase cannot be underestimated, but they are overshadowed by the in uence of environmental changes caused by industry. Since World War II industrial expansion has been increasing ever faster, releasing thousands of natural and man-made agents into the environment. It is evident that the environment is not con ned solely to the industrial production site but the air, soil, water, buildings, drinking water, food, drugs, and so on may also be contaminated.
