ABSTRACT

The “right” solution to plant layout problems is important for two reasons. First, material-handling costs range anywhere from 30% to 75% of total manufacturing costs. Any savings in material handling realized through a better arrangement of the departments is a direct contribution to the improvement of overall efficiency of the operation. Second, plant layout is a long-term, costly proposition, and any modification or rearrangement of the existing plant represents a large expense and cannot be easily accomplished.
