ABSTRACT

Life can be considered to be nanoscience in the wild native state. Living organisms are proof that self-replicating molecular nanoengines exist and function, performing work; building material structures of great strength and subtlety; reproducing and repairing themselves; and processing information to identify and control sources of materials and energy, ward off threats, and carry out survival strategies. In this chapter we will explore some of the nanoscale phenomena that underlie life processes.
