ABSTRACT
In the seventeenth century, Sir Isaac Newton provided a fundamental thread that is quite relevant to nanoscience: “If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Newton is credited for making this statement in a letter to Robert Hooke in which he refers to Galileo and Kepler. In the same vein, we all must pay tribute to those that have come before us-those who established the foundation for what we have today-for the benefi t of the scientist, technologist, and those properly enlightened with a strong social conscious.
