Fluid mechanics is the study of ”uids at rest and in motion. This concept plays a critical role in the area of biomedical engineering. To better understand this, let us ™rst discuss “what is a ”uid?” A ”uid can be described as something that does not hold its form or shape. It is something that is easily deformed (as compared to a solid). Liquids, such as water and oils, and gases, such as air and oxygen, all ™t into this category. The classical de™nition of a ”uid is a substance that deforms continuously under constant shearing stress.
