ABSTRACT
Ionizing radiation deposits its energy, in the form of excitations and ionizations, in matter in amounts almost directly proportional to the mass of each molecular species present. Excitations do not appear to play a role in causing biologically significant damage but ionizations can occur in any molecule in the cell creating a cation radical.
