ABSTRACT
The biological effects of irradiation are the end product of a series of events which are set in motion by the passage of radiation through the medium. The initial events are ionizations and excitations of atoms and molecules of the medium along the tracks of the ionizing particles. These physical perturbations lead to physicochemical reactions, then chemical reactions, and finally the biological effect. The physical and chemical reactions that initiate the process are briefly described in this chapter.
