ABSTRACT

A casting computer aided engineering (CAE) system named Stefan3D has been developed by an industry–university cooperative project. Stefan3D is specially designed for daily use by industrial casting engineers. This chapter describes the main features of Stefan3D and its application to die-casting mould filling simulations. Stefan3D is one of the general purpose casting CAE system programs developed by the Stefan project at Tohoku University, organized by Professor Niyama under the support of over 30 Japanese industrial companies since 1992. Practical simulations can be performed with Stefan3D on standard business PCs including laptops. The maximum number of meshes that Stefan3D can handle may vary with the memory that the PC has. Data conversion from three-dimensional computer aided design data to mesh data for Stefan3D is prepared for the convenience of easy mesh data generation. A casting computer aided engineering system named Stefan3D has been developed by an industry–university cooperative project in Japan.
