ABSTRACT

Wireless communication is undergoing an explosive growth. Voice traffic volume may be growing steadily, but wireless data services are quickly coming to dominate. We live in the Information Age, driven by our growing dependence on computers, cellular phones, pagers, fax machines, email, and the Internet. This demand for real-time information exchange is being made on an increasingly mobile workforce. Wireless communication networks include everything from cellular, personal communications system (PCS), and group system for mobile communications (GSM) networks to wireless LANs, wireless ATM, and satellite-based networks. Applications for wireless communications have found their way into the networking arena and the transfer of volumes of data. Although wireless data communication is one of the most promising communications technologies, the industry is still in its infancy.
