ABSTRACT

Today’s information technology (IT) spans from local area networks to wide area networks that support numerous applications locally and remotely. The job of a network manager is complicated and he/she needs to manage the heterogeneous network locally and remotely. Network management today is mostly a combination of local and remote configuration and management with software. A collection of management applications that provides an interface to network management protocols [e.g., simple network management protocol (SNMP)] is typically called a network management system (NMS). The management device is called a management station and the managed device is called the agent. A management station provides the required values of different parameters from its virtual store called the management information base (MIB). A management application can query an agent’s MIB and present the result in readable form on the management station. There are two types of network management: centralized and distributed network management system (CDNMS). There are many issues for network management. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has formally defined five network management categories. They are performance management, fault management, configuration management, security management, and accounting management.
