ABSTRACT

Fiber channel is part of the recent revolution in computer communications caused by incorporating serial transmission line design techniques and technologies into application in computer architectures that have conventionally used bus-based types of data transport. Current data transfer protocols (e.g., HIPPI and SCSI) have problems that limit their usefulness in mass storage. The limitations include limited speed, limited distance between devices, and limited number of devices supported. These limitations caused the industry to start thinking about alternatives. The alternative is fiber channel.
