ABSTRACT

Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) is an endeavor with a goal to optimize the communication of individuals with significant communication disorders (ASHA, 2004). For individuals who have complex communication needs, the process of achieving communication success may be perceived as an insurmountable challenge by their families and those providing clinical services. However, students of rehabilitation engineering and professional rehabilitation engineers on AAC teams can contribute to the success of such endeavors. Individuals who rely on AAC are attending school, graduating from college, and participating in the workforce, because of rehabilitation technology and services.
