ABSTRACT

Over 60 species of gram-negative β-proteobacteria are currently classiŠed within the genus Burkholderia.1 Little is known about the majority of these bacteria, with the exception of those that are clinically relevant, including Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) species, Burkholderia pseudomallei, Burkholderia mallei, and Burkholderia gladioli. This chapter will review the basic biology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of these organisms (with an emphasis on the BCC) and will present a recently developed protocol for multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of Burkholderia spp.2
