ABSTRACT

Kingella kingae (Kingella, named after its discover Elizabeth O. King) was Šrst described in 1960. The bacterium is oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. Besides producing a selective acid from glucose and maltose, K. kingae is hemolytic on blood agar. As a normal inhabitant of the upper respiratory tract that is at some time present in 75% of children over 6 months of age, K. kingae mainly causes bacteremia, arthritis, and spondylodiscitis in children.
