ABSTRACT

The family Enterobacteriaceae covers a large group of gramnegative bacteria, which were previously classiŠed into 11 genera and 26 species on the basis of biochemical and antigenic analyses. Recent application of various molecular techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing, has resulted in an exponential increase in the number of new genera and species within the family. To date, a total of 47 genera, 247 species, and 56 subspecies are recognized in the Enterobacteriaceae family.1 An updated list of Enterobacteriaceae species can be found at the Web site https://www.bacterio.cict.fr.
