ABSTRACT

A boiler is used to change the energy in a fuel, usually fossil fuel, into steam. It can be either a fi re tube design or a water tube design. Whatever the design is, a boiler has several main components:

Burner• Tubes• Chamber between tubes• Flue•

Most boilers also have an economizer, water treatment, and some environmental protection ancillaries with the fl ue. Fuel and air are mixed and burnt in a burner to release its heat. The kind of burner depends on the fuel. In a fi re tube boiler, the fl ame from the burning of fuel fl ows inside the tubes. The heat from the fl ame transfers to water surrounded outside the tubes. In a water tube boiler, water fl ows inside the tubes and fl ame fl ows outside the tubes. The fl ue is the stack that carries off combustion products such as carbon dioxide and excess air.
