Data Description and Simple Inference: Mortality and Water Hardness in the United Kingdom

Following this initial graphical exploration, some type of correlation coefficient may be computed for mortality and calcium concentration. Pearson correlation coefficient is generally used, but others, for example, Spearman’s rank correlation, may be more appropriate if the data are not considered to have a bivariate normal distribution. The relationship between the two variables will be examined separately for northern and southern towns.
