Proteomics research is usually deﬁned as the global detection of proteins present in biological samples. Protein sequencing has long been used to identify proteins in biochemical research. N-terminal sequencing methods using stepwise, chemical peptide degradation, such as Edman degradation [149, 150, 151], are tedious and slow. The traditional sequencing technology has proven useful for the identiﬁcation of many proteins, but does not scale up to the automated high-throughput (HTP) experimentation required for global expression proteomics.
