ABSTRACT

Good anesthesia is an important aspect in the well-being of the animal and all the investigators should know their ethical and legal responsibilities to avoid unnecessary pain and stress in the animal. It is also relevant as regards the scientic validity of any study that requires animals. On the other side, it plays an important role in the experimental design and results of the biomedical investigation. Therefore, the election of anesthesia and the ways of administration should be carefully considered.1-3

Analgesia: Lack of sensitivity to pain, without causing unconsciousness. Sedation: Calm state, generally accompanied by drowsiness. General anesthesia: Temporal controlled unconsciousness, induced through intoxication of

the central nervous system. Time of the maximum effect: Time between the moment of the application of the anesthetic

and the moment of its highest effect. Recovery time: Time between the initial application and the ability of standing without any help.

Any technique can be considered adequate if it allows for absence of pain in the animal, appropriate surgical conditions, and fast recovery. Some aspects of anesthesia include:
