ABSTRACT

The concept of the clearance of substances in the kidney is central in renal physiology as it provides a way to evaluate the excretion of substances through the kidney.

Renal clearance is the volume of plasma that is equal to the amount of substance being eliminated through urine per minute. Clearance can take values from zero (in substances that are not eliminated through urine) up to a value equal to renal plasma ow (in those substances completely eliminated from the blood through the kidney).
