ABSTRACT
The history of the isolated perfused heart starts in the nineteenth century when Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig designed a method for isolated mammalian heart articial nutrition. In that model, the aorta was tied into the carotid artery of a conscious animal. The blood of the donor animal perfused the coronary arteries of the receptor heart. However, this method gained no major popularity, probable due to coagulation problems.
