Although there have been considerable improvements in the design of autosamplers and solvent delivery systems, arguably, the most significant advancement in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in more than a decade has been the introduction of so-called ultra-performance liquid chromatographs (UPLC). In contrast to conventional HPLC systems that have a pressure limitation of around 5500 psi, UPLC systems are capable of operating at more than twice this pressure.
