ABSTRACT

The two previous chapters stressed those aspects of deception that relate to human cognition. However, one can ask whether deception is a purely human phenomenon and question if deception can arise in the solution to mathematical games played by strictly rational players that are not affected by human emotions. In this chapter, we argue that the answers to these questions are no and yes, respectively. We also illustrate how the framework of noncooperative games provides answers to the questions of how to use deception optimally and how to guard against it.
