ABSTRACT

The companion animal industry continues its robust growth with a global market value of approximately US$60 billion for pet food and pet care products. The United States is the single largest market with approximately 36 percent of world sales (estimated to be US$26.1 billion by 2011). Dog and cat food make up over 70 percent of the market. Market drivers include an increase in pet ownership, humanization of pets by owners, an increased popularity of dry foods, and an increased desire by owners for very high-quality pet diets containing functional ingredients.1
