ABSTRACT
In this chapter some of the elementary definitions used in light-tissue optics are presented. In addition, the rules that were developed over the centuries regarding absorption and how to model light scattering are described. The conditions requiring the use of either Mie or Rayleigh scattering are also postulated. Some derived optical interaction processes are described, highlighting Raman scattering and the Doppler effect.
