ABSTRACT
Quantum mechanics provided the mathematical foundation for our understanding of the properties of atoms. With this foundation in place, progress came quickly. Some physicists used the new theory to develop a more complete picture of the electronic properties of atoms, while others went on to apply the theory to the study of the atomic nucleus.
