ABSTRACT
The study of elastic behavior is fundamental to the understanding of the mechanical properties of materials. The elastic moduli are a property of the strength of the chemical bond of the material and are not affected by the various strengthening mechanisms employed to increase the yield or tensile strength of the material. Elastic deformations involve the stretching but not the breaking of bonds, so that the solid returns to its original configuration when stresses are relaxed.
