ABSTRACT
The ability of atoms and molecules to form chemical bonds is the defining feature of the structure and properties of solids. The types of bonds that are formed determine if the material will be a metal, a ceramic, or a polymer, and whether the material will conduct electricity, transmit light, or be magnetic.
