ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a methodology for the design and implementation of a discrete-event simulation model. It is not the only way to implement such a model, nor is it necessarily the best-but it is in use and it works. (It is also used for other types of study, although the general approach is modified to suit the method of analysis to be used.)

The methodology has been developed over a number of years through trial and error. Ideas have been culled from a variety of sources. Some have been tried, found not to be useful and have been dropped. Other ideas have been found useful and have been kept. Others have been modified or parts of them used. The resulting methodology covers all aspects of the design and development of a simulation model-from requirements through design and development to testing. Just as this methodology has been constructed from pieces taken from various sources, it is suggested that the reader take those elements of this approach that are useful to them and incorporate them into the reader’s own approach.
