Obesity is an independent risk factor for the development of both hypertension and cardiovascular disease. This chapter will summarize: techniques for measuring blood pressure in obese individuals and the effect of obesity on these measurements; the evidence that substantiates that obesity is an independent risk factor for the development of hypertension; an explanation of how obesity may result in the development of hypertension; a brief summary of other cardiovascular abnormalities associated with obesity; and finally a brief summary of how to manage the hypertensive obese individual.
