ABSTRACT

In this chapter I brieœy discuss the following issues. First, what ethics is in the context of animal research, and what it is not. Second, why animals deserve moral consideration. Third, why ethical issues are important and why scientists should be playing a far more active role in the ethical debate on animal research. Finally, I shall give some prac tical examples of how ethical considerations can often improve the science to give more robust data and, in that way, should be seen as a positive addition to any research programme rather than being dismissed as a burden.
